The infamous “malice at the palace” brawl took place between the Detroit Pistons and Indiana Pacers at the Palace stadium in Auburn Hills, Michigan, in 2004. The film “Last Year at Marienbad” was released in 1961 and details an affair that may or may not have occurred at a European château. Ezawa shrewdly aligns these strange bedfellows in a pair of digital animations—the first in color, the second in black-and-white with 3-D effects—that emphasize the kinetic surprise of the basketball game and the glacial circularity of the mind game.
